Marcia Bonsell(Children Book Printing printing). vice president of production at Communicorp printing . Inc Brochure Printing printing. Columbus. Georgia
Ms. Bonsell started her printing career in 1968 working as an entry-level bindery worker. She was assigned the work that the skilled men did not want to handle. Deciding that this was unjust. she decided to prove that the work of women and men in the printing industry should be equal. From that moment. Ms. Bonsell took the time to ask questions and learn about each piece of bindery equipment. After earning her stripes on the bindery equipment. she ventured to all other plant equipment and departments to gain an understanding of each area. This quest for knowledge was her first step in being prepared for her exciting career in the printing industry.
In 1977 shopping bag printing printing Hard Cover Printing . Ms. Bonsell. along with her two children. relocated to Florida from upstate New York. Little did she realize that this move would have a large impact on her career. Once in Florida. she starting working as a folder operator and soon learned that she was the first woman folder operator in all of Florida.nbsp; Ms. Bonsell saw this opportunity as a chance to grow and initiated training to encourage other women to take up the trade. Any piece of information about the business that co-workers would teach her she took in stride. Her motherrsquo;s words of encouragement followed her: ldquo;she could become anything she wanted to be by just applying herself.rdquo;
When the opportunity to become purchasing agent arose. Ms. Bonsell took the opportunity and ran with it. A new door of possibilities opened for her. She moved into scheduling. estimating(printing Brochure Printing ). customer service. and job planning Magazine Printing printing. quickly learning all facets of production. She continued to grow in her field. and soon plant superintendent was her next position. Since Microsoft Windows was just coming into the industry printing . Ms. Bonsell developed a training program to teach herself before teaching the software to others. During this time. as a single parent. Ms. Bonsell raised her two children. taking them to any activity they wanted to participate in but also working several side jobs just to keep up with the industry and further her skills.
In 2000. Ms. Bonsell was contacted to apply for the position of plant operations manager at Communicorp printing Flyer Printing . a subsidiary of Aflac printing Box Printing . in Columbus printing Box Printing . Georgia. She went for the interview. not intentionally seeking employment. and figured she had nothing to lose. She took the position. At Communicorp four color printing. she instituted a system of training and testing in all production areas. A new set of written procedures was developed printing . and workers soon saw the benefits of these procedures and accepted them. In less than a year after joining Communicorp. job delivery rate went from a negative to over an 85 on-time delivery rate (since then the number has improved into the high nineties). Regular documented programs were instituted due to the lack of equipment maintenance. and vendor qualification programs were also installed by Ms. Bonsell. In 2005(printing Children Book Printing ). she was promoted to vice president of production. That same year she earned her BBA in management.
Throughout her career(Children Book Printing printing). she was affiliated with March of Dimes Catalog/Booklet Printing printing. Relay for Life(printing Hard Cover Printing ). Outdoor Games printing . Iron Girl. Holy Family Church. Toys for Tots. and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. She is also a certified volunteer at Childrenrsquo;s Healthcare in Atlanta and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. Her work for Cayuga Chapter of the Bright Idea committee was also recognized. Ms. Bonsell has been described as a ldquo;compassionate yet firm leaderrdquo; who is ldquo;extremely alert to the technology metamorphosisrdquo; and ldquo;quick to embrace change.rdquo;
Established in 1976(printing Bag Printing ). the Berber Award recognizes the contributions of women to the graphic communications industry. To date. it remains the industryrsquo;s only award that specifically honors womenrsquo;s achievements. The engraved Berber Award plaque will be presented to Ms. Bonsell at Printing Industries of Americarsquo;s Fall Administrative Meetings printing . November 12ndash;15 printing. 2009. in Charleston. South Carolina. This forum hosts an impressive audience of industry leaders. including boards of directors and committee members for Printing Industries of America. the Printing Industries of Americarsquo;s Ben Franklin Honor Society. and the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF).
